1. Start With the Foundation
Begin with your table linen or placemat.
For a modern look, neutral shades such as ivory, cream, taupe, stone, and soft gray create an understated foundation. If your dinnerware is simple, you can introduce more character through texture or color here.
2. Build From the Plate
Place the dinner plate at the center of each setting.
If you're hosting a more formal dinner, a charger can be placed underneath to add another layer of texture and visual depth. A charger is decorative rather than a surface for serving food.
For a more relaxed meal, simply let the dinner plate stand on its own.
3. Add Flatware Thoughtfully
The basic rule is simple: place utensils in the order they will be used, working from the outside in.
Forks generally sit to the left of the plate, while knives and spoons sit to the right. Keep the pieces aligned and give them enough space to feel intentional rather than crowded.
